Bio
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Colorado at Boulder is a tier 1 research institution. The Department has 50 tenure track faculty and the total number of faculty, staff, graduate students and postdoctoral associates in greater than 400. The department has one Nobel Prize winner (Tom Cech) and five members of the National Academy. Total annual research budget for the Department is typically in excess of $12M. The Department offers courses to approximately 3,500 students every year. Bruce Eaton began his term as Chairman by evaluating the unit operations overall and significantly revamped the finance and accounting structure of the department. We created new human resources and finance positions. Bruce Eaton negotiated the funding of those positions with the Dean and played a central role in crafting the job descriptions and the hiring decisions. He rebuilt the whole front office of the Department. As part of the program review process Bruce Eaton established a new model for the University of Colorado at Boulder for the 5 year science unit performance review. This model was touted by the Chancellor and the Provost as the “the collaborative way to engage the university leadership.” Bruce Eaton helped create the first endowed Chair (Cech-Leinwand) in biochemistry for the department. Bruce Eaton worked closely with CIRES to negotiate campus funding to create the Atmospheric Chemistry Center of Excellence (Boulder Daily Camera, front page, May 28, 2012). He also negotiated multimillion dollar packages to retain high profile faculty. Bruce Eaton worked closely with the Dean of A & S and campus leadership to create the proposal to retire the $2.7M in debt he inherited when taking over the department. He also contributed one year of his salary to this debt reduction plan.
